I Married the Klondike, first published in 1954, is the account of Laura Beatrice Burton, who, at the age of 29, left Toronto to teach kindergarten in the gold rush town of Dawson City, Yukon. She would make Dawson City and the wilds of the Canadian north her home for the next 25 years. Illustrated with 9 pages of photographs.

I Married the Klondike eBook Laura Beatrice Berton

Eleven years after the Klondike Gold Rush, Laura Beatrice Berton received an invitation to leave her teaching position in Toronto and teach kindergarten in Dawson City, Yukon. The remainder of this memoir details the next 25 years teaching, marrying and raising a family in the Yukon territory.

If this book was not selected by my local book discussion group, I would not have read this book. Several times I considered putting it down; however, a review of fifteen Amazon reviews yielded between a 4.6 star review and I thought others might be seeing something I did not. Completing the book, I must disagree. Overall I found the memoir boring detailing an endless parade of individuals the author met in the Yukon. It was only in the final chapters did I feel that the author truly described the land.

I Married the Klondike eBook Laura Beatrice Berton Reviews

After visiting Dawson City, it was such fun to read about life around the turn of the century in this new town! I was surprised that many residents were so cosmopolitan.
I ordered this book because I had been to Skagway, Alaska and knew this book was about living in the Klondike. I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I thought I would. The things the author talked about were interesting, but the style of writing was a little drab.
This is the book that landed us in Fairbanks for a lot of our lifetime. If you like books about the Klondike and the gold rush, you'll like this one.
This book was hard to put down! I wish I’d read it before we took our trip to Dawson a few years ago! It gives a true picture of the hard life of the miners and their families.
A sparkling and equal parts visually gorgeous and gory telling that illustrates the energy, endurance and courage of those spunky and even glamorous but more often glamorless early settlers of the Klondike. This was an adventure that was hard to put down and even sad to leave.
What a fascinating look at life in the north. This book shattered my assumptions about life in this part of the world. The author gave a very realistic view of the highlights of life in a very harsh environment as well as the day-to-day challenges and pleasures of such a life. The colorful descriptions provide a very realistic picture without becoming cumberson. This book also helped me look differently at the pleasures and challenges in my own life. Great read!
Found this book on a trip to Alaska and rode the same train the author did on her way to the Yukon to teach school in the sunset of the gold rush. What adventures she had! She is a superb writer who kept the story line clear and unencumbered from unnecessary detail, yet wove incidents into clear pictures that kept drawing me on page after page. This book is required reading for school kids in Canada, as she lived and described an important phase of Canada's history that otherwise would have been neglected. Can't recommend this book too highly!
